Heavy rains beginning in late December 2025 and persisting through January 2026 caused widespread flooding across southern and central Mozambique. By mid‑January, nearly 600,000–700,000 people were affected, with projections rising to 1.1 million as rains persisted and controlled dam releases in South Africa worsened flooding.
